One rainy week is all it takes for condensation to sneak into electrical cabinets, interfere with signals, and eventually fry expensive components. While these machines are essential for precision work, their sensitivity to moisture demands more attention than most give them. 1. Make Sure the Cabinet is Actually Sealed

Many operators assume a closed door means a sealed cabinet. It doesn’t. Air gaps around cable entries or old, brittle rubber seals let moisture creep in. Use sponge filters or breathable membranes at ventilation spots, and check seals every few months. If a door gasket is cracked or stiff, replace it—it’s cheaper than replacing a control board.

2. Coating Circuit Boards Helps More Than You Think

A thin layer of acrylic or silicone coating on your circuit boards adds real protection against condensation and corrosion. This is especially worth doing in coastal areas or shops with fluctuating temps. Just make sure boards are clean and dry before applying anything, or you’ll trap moisture in.

3. Desiccants: Cheap Insurance During Downtime

When the machine isn’t running—especially over a holiday or long weekend—humidity builds up fast. Put color-indicating silica gel inside the cabinet. When it changes color, dry it out and reuse it. It’s one of the lowest-effort ways to keep the system dry, and it works well if you remember to check it.

4. Don’t Skip Routine Electrical Checks

Every six to twelve months, open the cabinet and check for signs of rust, cracked insulation, or loosened wiring. A quick visual inspection and an ohmmeter test can catch problems before they lead to a shutdown. If your machine runs in a high-humidity environment year-round, bump the checks to quarterly.

5. After Long Breaks, Don’t Just Hit Start

If a machine has been sitting unused, give it a proper once-over before firing it up. Look for signs of condensation, mold, or corrosion, especially around connectors. You’d be surprised how often machines fail within 30 minutes of restart simply because no one looked inside first. Let components warm up gradually if possible—it helps evaporate any lingering moisture safely.
