Proper Operation of a Chip Conveyor

Chip conveyors are essential in machine tool operations. They remove metal shavings from machining processes, including iron, aluminum, and copper. Proper operation keeps machines and workshops clean, protects guideways from scratches, maintains machining accuracy, and enables scrap recovery. While types vary—scraper, chain, and screw conveyors—the core operating principles remain consistent. Correct handling ensures stable performance, safety, and long equipment life.

Pre-Startup Preparation

Preparation is crucial. Inspect the power supply and wiring for integrity, secure connections, and reliable grounding. Clear debris from the conveyor channel and internal components. Check scrapers, chains, and screw blades for damage, deformation, or looseness, and repair or replace as needed. Replenish lubricating oil to prevent friction wear. Confirm interlock settings to match conveyor speed with the machine tool.

Operating Procedures

Start-Up Sequence:

Activate the chip conveyor first, ensuring smooth operation before starting the machine tool. This prevents overloads and chip accumulation.

Monitoring During Operation:

Observe chip flow, speed, vibration, and noise. If blockages or unusual sounds occur, stop the system immediately. Avoid forcing operation, which may damage components.

Handling Sticky or Heavy Chips:

Remove debris from scrapers and blades promptly. Control chip discharge volume to avoid overloading.

Shutdown and Post-Operation Care

After machining, continue running the conveyor for 5–10 minutes to clear residual chips. Turn off the power only after passages are empty. Inspect all components for wear or looseness and tighten as necessary. For idle periods, remove remaining chips, apply rust-preventive oil, shut off power and air, and cover for dust protection.
