CNC shaving machine commissioning starts with disciplined checks that protect people, parts, and the machine. You verify PPE, fluids, air, and power. Confirm the cutter and fixtures match the gear. You clamp the work securely and check runout. Then you run a clean dry cycle and validate parameters before the first cut. These habits prevent scrap and unlock stable accuracy from day one.

CNC Shaving Machine Pre-Checks

Put safety first. Wear work clothes and safety shoes; never wear gloves near rotating parts. Tie back long hair and wear a cap. Use safety goggles to block chips. Walk the area and clear obstructions. Keep rags, loose tools, and packaging off the table and away from spindles and belts.

Lubrication, Coolant, and Air Systems

Check every lube point—guideways, lead screws, and bearing housings. Top up per the lubrication chart. Inspect the coolant tank. Use clean coolant at the correct level and make sure lines are open. If the machine uses pneumatic clamping, confirm line integrity and set shop air to the specified range, typically 0.4–0.6 MPa. Log each check before you proceed.

Electrical Safety and Control Readiness

Release all emergency stops and verify indicator lights. Inspect cables and connectors for damage or loose seating. Power the control and load the correct part program. Confirm axis homes and reference points. Back up parameters before changes. Test interlocks and covers so the machine stops if a door opens.

Shaving Cutter and Workpiece Preparation

Match the cutter to the gear: module, pressure angle, and helix direction must align with the drawing. Inspect the cutter for chips and wear. Mount it on the spindle and clamp it securely. Use a dial indicator to check radial runout; target ≤ 0.01 mm. Prepare the gear blank: measure radial and face runout, confirm hardness (often ≤ HRC 35), and remove burrs and contamination.

Fixtures, Clamping, and Alignment

Choose centers, mandrels, or a dedicated fixture to suit the part. Mount and align the fixture on the table or tailstock. For shaft-type gears, set the tailstock center to support the free end. Clamp the work so it cannot slip under load. Verify axial location, concentricity, and face contact. Record setup data for repeatability.

Parameter Set and Trial Run

Load the recommended shaving cycle—rough, finish, and micro-retraction stages. Preselect radial feed and spark-out times. Set safe limits for depth and feed. Jog through the path with the spindle off. Then run a dry cycle and watch motion and clearances. Start a light-cut trial on a sample part. Measure tooth form, profile, and surface; adjust feed and retraction increment as needed.

First-Piece Approval and Documentation

Capture measurements and compare them to the print. Update offsets and parameters. Lock the setup once the numbers sit comfortably in the tolerance band. Save the program and a photo of the fixture and clamping. Note cutter ID, runout, coolant condition, and air pressure. This record speeds future changeovers and stabilizes quality.
