A clear maintenance and clearance calibration routine helps operators reduce downtime and keep production quality consistent.

Operators should start each shift with a simple but careful inspection. Clean the spindle end face, taper bore, tool mounting area, and nearby covers before loading tools. Metal chips, oil residue, and dust can affect tool holder contact and create positioning errors. During machining, operators should listen for unusual noise, watch for vibration, and check whether the spindle temperature rises abnormally. A healthy spindle head should run smoothly without grinding sounds or sharp heat increase. After the machine stops, the operator should wipe the outside surfaces and cover exposed areas to prevent dust and moisture from entering the bearing zone.

Lubrication Care for Boring and Milling Spindle Heads

Lubrication plays a major role in bearing life and transmission stability. The maintenance team should use the grease or oil recommended for the spindle bearings, gears, and drive parts. They should also follow the service schedule instead of waiting for failure symptoms. Check the automatic lubrication system regularly, confirm that oil reaches each point smoothly, and clean blocked oil lines before they damage the bearing surface. Proper lubrication reduces friction and heat. However, too much grease can attract chips and dirt, so the operator should avoid over-lubrication and remove excess oil around the spindle head.

Clearance Calibration for Accuracy Control

Clearance calibration keeps the spindle head within its designed accuracy range. Long operation can reduce bearing preload and increase axial or radial clearance. Once clearance grows beyond the standard range, the spindle may show runout, poor hole accuracy, rough surfaces, or unstable cutting marks. A normal workshop can arrange monthly calibration for standard use. Heavy cutting, long shifts, or high-speed production may require a shorter inspection cycle. Before calibration, the technician should stop the machine, disconnect power, remove the spindle guard, and use a dial indicator to measure axial play and radial runout. The measured values should match the machine manual or factory inspection standard.

Preload Adjustment and Shim Control

Technicians usually adjust clearance by controlling bearing lock nuts and preload shims. They should add or remove shims evenly and make small changes step by step. This method helps control bearing preload without creating new stress inside the spindle head. Excessive preload can cause heat, noise, and possible seizure. Insufficient preload can leave runout and vibration unresolved. After every adjustment, the technician should recheck the spindle with the dial indicator and record the result.
