Hit emergency stops? Release them and confirm every interlock. Check door switches, hydraulic station pressure, and lube pressure; many machines lock motion when any safety is out of spec. Verify mode selection on the panel. In manual or handwheel mode, set the feed direction correctly and ensure the feed‑rate override is not at 0%. Scan the program or MDI for bad targets or an impossible feed. Finally, look for physical obstructions: a jammed way cover, debris on the rails, or shims tightened so much that sliding friction spikes. If a ballscrew turns hard by hand, stop and find out why.

Treat the hydraulic loop as a power source. Gauge the station pressure and compare it with the set value; low pressure can’t overcome axis resistance. Check the lubrication pump, lines, and oil level—poor lube raises friction on guides and ballscrews and stalls motion. Fix contamination now to prevent repeat faults later.

Read the drive’s alarm codes first; they are the shortest path to root cause. Use the I/O status page or a multimeter to confirm the CNC’s forward command reaches the drive. Inspect limit and proximity switches that might falsely signal out‑of‑range and block motion. Make sure the axis enable is active and the drive sees healthy power. Clear the electrical path from command to motion before you open the covers on the mechanics.

Mechanical Transmission Inspection of the Feed Axis

Check the parts that physically carry force. Measure ballscrew backlash and feel for tight spots. Inspect support bearings and couplings; a loose or cracked coupling won’t transmit torque. Examine guideway pairs for wear or scoring that can trap the saddle at certain positions. If you find damage, repair before restart; forcing motion risks bigger failures and lost accuracy.

Prove-Out: Safe Recovery and Test Run

After each fix, verify freedom of movement by hand. Power up and run a short no‑load test—three to five minutes. Watch current draw. Listen for rubbing, ticking, or hunting. Confirm smooth acceleration, stable feed, and a clean reversal. If you still see surging, recheck alignment, lubrication, and valve action. Only return to cutting after the axis runs quietly and repeatably.

Prevention Plan: Daily Habits that Stop Recurrence

Keep hydraulic and lube oils clean; change clogged filters before they starve the system. Log station pressure, temperatures, and drive alarms so trends stand out. Tighten couplings on schedule, adjust shim gaps, and keep way covers clear. Use a standard checklist at shift start to catch small drifts early. With disciplined routines, feed failure troubleshooting becomes rare because the axis stays healthy day to day.
