Start with the outer condition of the extinguisher. Check the cylinder for rust, dents, cracks, deformation, or other visible damage. Look at the hose and nozzle and make sure they are intact, clean, and free from blockage. Confirm that the label is still readable so staff can identify the extinguisher type, production date, and expiration date without difficulty.
Next, check the pressure gauge. The needle should stay within the normal operating range. If the pressure is too low, the extinguisher may not discharge effectively. If the pressure is abnormal in the opposite direction, the unit may also become unreliable. Staff should report any pressure problem immediately and remove the extinguisher from normal use until maintenance personnel inspect it.
Placement is equally important. Keep the extinguisher fixed in an easy-to-reach location close to the machine tool and near major fire-risk areas such as the spindle zone or electrical cabinet. Do not place it behind obstacles or in a corner blocked by tooling, pallets, or chip bins. At the same time, avoid direct sunlight, high heat, or heavy humidity, because these conditions can shorten service life and affect performance.

If the workshop uses dry powder extinguishers, technicians should check whether the powder has hardened or clumped. Once clumping appears, they should service or replace the extinguisher at once, because hardened powder can reduce firefighting effectiveness.
They should also inspect the valve, trigger, nozzle, and sealing parts. The valve must remain sealed without leakage. The trigger must move smoothly and respond reliably. The nozzle connection must stay firm. For carbon dioxide extinguishers, seal inspection is especially important because gas leakage can reduce internal pressure and weaken the extinguisher’s performance.
