Measure flatness with a straightedge and feeler gauges. Use a dial indicator if you need tighter confidence. If the deviation stays small, grind or lap only the high areas. Remove the minimum material to restore full contact.

  • Record the current height and bolt torque values.
  • Grind or lap the high spots, then deburr the edges.
  • Rebuild the stack with thin compensation shims where you still see gaps.
  • Tighten in a cross pattern, in two or three torque steps.
  • Recheck contact marks and level after the final torque.

This approach keeps the stack stable and avoids over-correcting one corner. It also reduces the risk of introducing new stress into the assembly.

Replace the shim set when you see deep pitting, cracking, or major warpage. Grinding a badly distorted shim can remove hardness and reduce strength. It also wastes time during setup.

After replacement, validate alignment with a simple run test. Watch vibration, temperature rise, and tool marks. If the machine stabilizes, lock the settings and document the final shim map.

Maintenance keeps accuracy from slipping again. Inspect the stack on a fixed schedule, not only after a failure. Wipe away sludge before it hardens. Apply a light anti-rust oil when humidity rises.

Create a short log. Track flatness checks, contact observations, and torque values. When a trend appears, you can correct early and avoid downtime.

Use one closing rule in every shop: measure, correct, and verify. That routine keeps your foundation solid and your machine predictable.
