How to Maintain a Slant Bed CNC Machine Tool in Winter

Temperature Management

Cold ambient temperatures can cause uneven expansion or contraction inside the machine, especially around sensitive parts like ball screws and spindle assemblies. Make sure the temperature sensors and heat exchangers are working properly. It also helps to let the machine warm up gradually before full operation. Avoid sudden thermal shocks by stabilizing the environment if possible.

Lubrication in Cold Conditions

Oil behaves differently when it’s cold—viscosity increases, which can starve bearings or cause sluggish axis movement. Use lubricants rated for low temperatures and check that oil pumps and flow paths are clean. Before winter hits, flush the system to get rid of water or impurities that could freeze or cause rust.

Seals and Gaskets

Winter air tends to be dry, which can make rubber and plastic seals brittle. If your machine has old gaskets or sealing strips, inspect and replace them early. Leaks can let cold air or dust in—both of which are bad news for precision machining.

Temperature changes can affect electrical contacts and insulation. Tighten loose terminal blocks, check for brittle cables, and inspect switches or connectors for signs of condensation or corrosion. If needed, wrap or insulate exposed wiring.
