Metal CNC Materials and Manufacturing Process

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is an automated control system that enables the manufacturing of complex parts using metalworking tools such as drills, boring tools, and lathes. Typically, CNC machines shape a blank material (metal, plastic, wood, or ceramic) into precise specifications following programmed instructions, without the need for a physical operator.

In other words, high-performance metal CNC machines enhance productivity and reduce labor costs, which significantly impacts a company’s profitability.

In this article, we’ll introduce you to some key aspects of metal CNC machines from the following three perspectives: the structural features of metal CNC machines, raw materials used in producing metal CNC machines, and detailed manufacturing processes.

1. Structural Features of Metal CNC Machines

Like conventional machine tools, metal CNC machines consist of a bed, column, guideways, worktable, and tool holder. To meet the demands of high precision and speed due to their control systems, the structural design of main components in CNC machines must fulfill requirements for high accuracy, high rigidity, high resonant frequency, low inertia, low friction, and an appropriate damping ratio.

1.1 Structural Characteristics of Basic Components

The basic components of a metal CNC machine include the bed, column, and worktable. Their main function is to support, carry, and maintain the relative positions of all parts.

Ideally, a CNC machine should be capable of both rough and fine machining. Therefore, it must withstand high cutting forces during roughing and ensure high precision during finishing.

1.2 Structural Features of the Main Drive System

The main drive system provides the cutting power required for various tools and workpieces. It must deliver constant power output across a wide speed range. To achieve optimal cutting speeds, the main drive system should offer stepless speed control over a broad range. Modern metal CNC machines typically use high-performance DC or AC spindle motors with stepless speed adjustment, which are more efficient than mechanical step-transmission systems.

2. Raw Materials Used to Manufacture Metal CNC Machines

Firstly, the machine’s mechanical components must be strong and rigid to support rapidly moving parts. The spindle, usually the most robust component, is supported by large bearings. The bed or worktable is mounted on hardened steel “ways,” which are often protected by flexible guards.

Cast iron used to be the preferred material for metalworking machines. Today, most machines widely use welded and forged products made from hot-rolled steel—such as stainless steel—to reduce cost and allow for more complex frame designs.

3. Detailed Manufacturing Process of Metal CNC Machines

Until recently, most machining centers were custom-built by machine tool manufacturers based on client requirements. The actual manufacturing process includes the following steps:

3.1 Welding the Base

The base of the machine is either cast or welded together. It then undergoes heat treatment to relieve casting or welding stresses.

The base is mounted in a large machining center, and the mounting areas for the guideways are machined to specification. These channels are ground flat, bolted, and secured to the base.

3.2 Bolting the Ball Screws

The mechanism that moves the bed or spindle is called a ball screw. These convert rotary motion from a drive motor into linear motion and consist of a screw shaft and supporting bearings. As the shaft rotates, the bearing block moves along the helical groove of the shaft, producing very precise linear motion that moves the table under the spindle or the spindle carriage itself.

These ball screws are bolted to the base, and the bearing blocks are bolted to the worktable or spindle housing.

3.3 Installing the Spindle

The spindle is machined, ground, and installed onto its drive motor. It is then bolted to a movable spindle bracket. In most machining centers, each motion axis has a separate ball screw and set of guideways.

3.4 The Controller

The computer is the core of the controller. It is housed in a climate-controlled enclosure mounted on the side of the frame or in the operator’s console. It contains all the operating memory, computer boards, power supplies, and other electronic circuits required to operate the machine.

The front of the controller features a video screen that displays program data, position, speed, feed rate, and other information needed by the operator to monitor machine performance.

Once assembled, the machine undergoes trial runs to verify accuracy. Each machine has slight physical variations that are numerically corrected in the computer operating system. These calibration values are stored in separate memory, and the machine continuously checks them. After testing, the finished machine is painted and prepared for shipment.
